The Client

Jamie Bird, the Director of Strategy at Birds, leads the strategic initiatives at this family-owned bakery. Established in 1919 by three brothers, Birds has grown into a fourth-generation enterprise, operating over 60 stores across England.

The Business Challenges

Despite the recent implementation of a NetSuite ERP system, Birds was struggling to gain the necessary insights for its senior management team. 

Importantly, the bakery lacked the team capacity and technical capabilities to extract and combine data from its NetSuite ERP and EPOS systems—essential for generating the timely and detailed KPIs needed daily.

Birds also wanted to understand how much more they could do with their data assets to improve business performance through the application of data science techniques.

The Process

Within 36 hours after submitting his requirements to the MeasureMatch Marketplace, Jamie received five high-quality pitches from boutique consultancies and independent consultants. 

Two days later, Jamie opened discovery conversations with two firms and within 10 days an initial project was under way with Michael Kerin, the Co-Founder & Director of Redsella, a specialist AI, ML & data science consultancy.

The Software: Microsoft Power BI and SharePoint

Describing the technical requirements, Michael noted, “We recommended and ultimately used Microsoft’s Power BI & SharePoint for the MIS system, given the range of data connectivity capabilities, the speed with which highly effective dashboards could be created for each of the key areas of the business, and the ease of deployment.” 

“It also future-proofs Birds in terms of expanding the solution to incorporate the additional data-driven intelligent solutions Redsella recommended down the line within the Microsoft products and cloud solutions ecosystem”, added Michael. 

Birds purchased Power BI licences for all team members who needed access to the dashboards.

The Results

The first operational version of the Management Information System (MIS) was launched within eight weeks of the contract being awarded to Redsella, delivering precisely the insights Birds’ leadership needed. This implementation included comprehensive user training and documentation of the system and its data sources—a significant asset in its own right.

The system has since seen several enhancements, growing as Birds' familiarity with its capabilities increases.
