Jamie Bird, the Director of Strategy at Birds, needed a capable partner to enable the leadership team to gain direct, useful access to data and insights from their NetSuite ERP and EPOS systems.
Birds Bakery, founded in 1919 by three Derby brothers, has grown into a beloved local bakery that prides itself on handcrafted goods made from scratch using traditional recipes. Committed to freshness and community, they source ingredients locally and are integral to local life and charities.
Birds has grown into a fourth-generation enterprise, operating over 60 stores across England.
Jamie Bird, the Director of Strategy at Birds, leads the strategic initiatives at this family-owned bakery.
Despite the recent implementation of a NetSuite ERP system, Birds was struggling to gain the necessary insights for its senior management team.
Importantly, the bakery lacked the team capacity and technical capabilities to extract and combine data from its NetSuite ERP and EPOS systems—essential for generating the timely and detailed KPIs needed daily.
Birds also wanted to understand how much more they could do with their data assets to improve business performance through the application of data science techniques.
Within 36 hours after submitting his requirements to the MeasureMatch Marketplace, Jamie received five high-quality pitches from boutique consultancies and independent consultants.
Two days later, Jamie opened discovery conversations with two firms and within 10 days an initial engagement was contracted with Michael Kerin, the Co-Founder & Director of Redsella, a specialist AI, ML & data science consultancy.
Over the following 9 months Michael worked together with the team at Birds across 4 distinct engagements via the MeasureMatch Marketplace.
The Software: Microsoft Power BI and SharePoint
Describing the technical requirements, Michael noted, “We recommended and ultimately used Microsoft’s Power BI & SharePoint for the MIS system, given the range of data connectivity capabilities, the speed with which highly effective dashboards could be created for each of the key areas of the business, and the ease of deployment.”
“It also future-proofs Birds in terms of expanding the solution to incorporate the additional data-driven intelligent solutions Redsella recommended down the line within the Microsoft products and cloud solutions ecosystem”, added Michael.
Birds purchased Power BI licences for all team members who needed access to the dashboards.
The first operational version of the Management Information System (MIS) was launched within eight weeks of the contract being awarded to Redsella, delivering precisely the insights Birds’ leadership needed. The implementation included comprehensive user training and documentation of the system and its data sources—a significant asset in its own right.
The system has since seen several enhancements, growing as Birds' familiarity with its capabilities increases.
“Jamie and the team at Birds have been great to work with, as they understand the benefits that data science can bring to so many areas of the organisation and are single-minded in their determination to realise that potential and continue to drive the 105 year-old business forward”.
Each phase of the engagement received a 5-star rating, culminating in feedback praising Michael’s and Redsella’s ability to tailor solutions to a wide range of IT skills:
“Redsella was excellent from start to finish - creating a solution that worked for those with strong IT skills down to the less IT literate. We are excited for the future,” Jamie added to his rating of the engagement with Michael Kerin's Redsella.
James Sandoval, Founder & CEO of MeasureMatch added, "Enabling uniquely skilled and talented solutions providers like Michael and the Redsella team to create value together with organizations like Birds Bakery is exactly why we’re building the MeasureMatch Marketplace. Seeing it happen week after week is incredibly exciting and inspiring."
